Decided to get serious about my points production. I’ d really like to see us hit the top 500. I wasn’t doing all that I can for that goal. Prior to today I had my computer (Ryzen 7 3700X, 32gb, 2070 Super) folding basically full time, although dropping the CPU when I was using it, and then when I’m playing a game the GPU obviously takes a hit.
Then I had my son’s PC (i5 2500K, 16gb, 1080) using the GPU for all night and the CPU here and there. However, this thing was throttling itself because it was getting too hot. It was uncomfortable touching the circa 2010 ( with only 1 120mm fan) case after it had been folding or gaming. So that was less than ideal.
Looking around, I had a bunch of stuff I could use to solve these problems and get my PPD up. I had the former contents of my PC before the Ryzen upgrade, an RX580, and a Ro sewill case that I bought a few years back and never touched. All sitting in boxes.
The happy gamer hooking his new PC up after the build
So I built my son a new PC using the i5 7600k with 16GB and his 1080 in the Ro sewill case which has good airflow and fans. Then I put the RX580 in the i5 2500k system that he was using and set it up with an ancient 5400RPM drive I pulled from my iMac years ago. Threw Win 10 on it, and set it up as a headless folding box in the guest room. For good measure I put FAH on my 2013 iMac as well. Then I worked out how to use my PC’s FAH advanced client to remotely control everything from my screen.
Clicking through shows the PPD for each client. That 1.9 is my system alone.
If ever ything runs constantly, I’m good for around 3.2 million PPD (sorry. 3.2 Oppoflops a day). Of course, that’s not realistic since he and I use our systems during the day, so I figure I’m realistically going to do 2.5 or so a day.
That should put a dent in our rankings. Thank goodness for free electricity. If my wife were driving and charging her Volt much now, I’d probably end up owing the power company with all of this running.

Bet the kid was happy to get an upgrade so he can play all the really fun new games at close to full settings. A little surprised you didn’t sell that chip and get an 84xx/94xx six core to avoid cpu limiting the graphics card.

It’s still a pretty solid CPU that I just had sitting around for the last couple weeks. He’s really looking forward to the new MS Fl ight Sim, now he’s well within the system requirements for it.

Man you’re pulling o ut all the stops! I added a RX 5700 XT to my setup a week ago and that finally bumped me over 2 million PPD reliably.

I don’t see any way to up my numbers at this point without spending more money, which I don’t intend to do. I’d maybe consider buying a new graphics card, but with Nvidia announcing new cards on the 15th, and the rumors about AMD’s new cards out there, it doesn’t seem like the right time.
I looked at the 5700XT. That thing is a monster at a really great price. I was actually close to buying one when the issue with my 2070S USB port cropped up, but then I read about all the new releases and decided to stick with the Nvidia since I’ve used them for so long and I’d read about driver issues on the Radeon. If they could do Crossfire with everything I’d buy a pair of 5700XTs and lose the Nvidia, but it seems like almost nothing works with that.

Verynice! I am capped out until the new team green cards come out and are shipping. I promised myself I’d skip a generation (running a 1080 now) but once I was two behind all bets were off!
Sort of want to do a threadripper build just to do one but the car parts budget would no likey that and all the sim racing stuff I want to buy is sold out due to everyone being stuck at home trying sim racing out so not a lot of reason to relegate my Ryzen 1700x + 1080 setup to the brother in law just yet.

I saw a video where a video editor built a new Threadripper and compared it to his old i7 with 2080ti. The CPU alone encoded 4K streams twice as fast as his old setup. It was crazy. I was planning on building one until I looked at the CPU price. Holy shnikeys! No Threadripper for me.

Yeah, lot of threads for the money, but also a lot of threads and a lot of money. Better to just buy a high-end Ryzen (which I guess you did) unless can really make use of all those threads.

Its an awesome performing card, I had the non XT version for about the last 6 months (upgraded from a GTX 1060 6gb) and loved it and found the XT as bestbuy for sub $400 so I jumped on it.
There have been a few driver issues but overall it’s been stable. This most recent gen AMD isn’t quite up to Nvidia polish, but they’re better the n they’ve been in a long time.

I used to play with Flight Sim. I landed the Cessna on the US Nimitz and parked next to the tower and saved the game there.
If you were putting, say, a 1060 into a case so that all that machine ever did was fold and visit websites on the internet, would would be the minimum CPU you’d use?

Likely won’t hit that daily estimate, I’m rolling my three machines 24/7 on team LTT. My theoretical is 3.2 million per machine (9 daily)but lack of work units and small work units have me averaging 3.1 daily. I’ll come over to team OPPO after I crack top 300 for Team LTT and 100 M points. Also use this website for better and more up to date points https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=947834

I’d already been using that for my points, it’s got some great info. My estimates were based on what that site had for my stats. I’m at 2.25 a day now, but the extra system and changes haven’t been online for more than 12hr, so I think the 2.5 is going to turn out pretty realistic.
Come on over here! I want someone to take my place at the top, LTT is already way up there, team Oppo needs you!

I still can't get any work units for my 580s or 290s...
